Headshots in DC & VA: Tips & Examples

When it comes to your business, first impressions matter – and your headshots are often the very first introduction your audience has to you and your brand. Polished, professional imagery builds trust and communicates your story long before you say a word.

Whether you’re planning a dedicated headshot session or incorporating it into a full branding session, here are my best tips for headshots in DC and beyond to make sure your headshots feel intentional and true to you.

(To note: AI has made headshots more accessible, but less sincere and trustworthy. Let’s take true photos of you to accurately represent who you are and how you show up.)

Tips for headshots in DC

Styling outfits that work for your brand

One of the most important elements of your headshot session is your wardrobe. The goal is to create images that feel versatile and timeless, while still aligned with your brand identity.

For a simple headshot or quarter-day brand session, you’ll likely have time for one to two outfit options. I typically recommend one polished but casual look and one slightly dressier option. This variety gives you flexibility when using your photos across your website, social media, press features, and beyond.

All of my clients receive my brand styling guide, which includes tips, inspiration, and guidelines for selecting outfits that photograph beautifully. And while you certainly can (and should!) pull from your own closet, I highly recommend working with a stylist to curate your wardrobe. A stylist ensures your attire reflects the same professionalism and quality as your overall brand, while your brand photographer can help refine those choices to match the storylines and concepts they capture.

Pre-session beauty prep

Your headshots should look like you – just a little more polished and professional. These are my recommendations for beauty prep to ensure you feel like the best version of yourself.

Hair and makeup

Professional hair and makeup can go a long way toward a confident, photo-ready look. If you’re booking professional services, plan for them to wrap up about 30 minutes before your shoot begins. I suggest asking for a clean, everyday look rather than full glam.

Nails

Given that headshots can include your hands, I recommend a fresh manicure in a neutral shade. If your brand calls for bold colors, go for it! Otherwise, simple and understated is best!

If you’ll be barefoot or in open-toe shoes, consider a pedicure too. Small details go a long way in elevating the final images!

Finding the perfect location: Where to take headshots

The setting of your headshot session sets the tone for your final results. While shooting at home can create a relaxed and authentic environment, many of my clients opt for an off-site location that is aligned with their brand. I also offer a studio location in Old Town Alexandria with a versatile space for headshots!  When choosing your location, keep these questions in mind:

  • Does the space have ample natural light? (Big windows are ideal!)
  • Is there more than one area that feels cohesive with your brand?
  • Does it feel authentic and natural – not staged?

If you’re deciding between multiple options, your brand photographer can provide input on which space will photograph best. If you’re session is off-site, remember to allow for extra time before and after your session for set-up and tear-down.

Props and what to bring

Props aren’t just “extras,” they help tell your brand’s story and make our headshots feel less stiff and more personal. Think about the tools you use in your daily work or signature items that communicate your brand personality.

I create a prop list for all of my clients, curated based on their needs and with specifics about who will bring them! However, if your brand photographer hasn’t done so, here are a few ideas to help start your list:

  • Work tools: laptop, phone, camera, microphone, apron, art supplies, yoga mat, tile samples, blueprints, etc. Whatever you actually use in your work!
  • Products: If you sell physical goods, bring a few of your favorite products to feature in your imagery.
  • Marketing materials: Think of the materials you provide your clients — brochures, client guides, or catalogs.
  • Personal touches: Desktop accessories, mugs, notebooks, or small decor items that make a workspace feel authentic.

And, if your session is at a neutral location, adding a few personal touches can transform the space into one that feels more you. I recommend bringing one or two framed art pieces, branded decor, or a favorite plant to bring the environment to life.

Book headshots in DC and the DMV

As a brand photographer in the DMV, I know how important it is to have headshots that work just as hard as you do. Headshots are an extension of your brand story, and I take care to ensure they feel elevated, versatile, and true to your voice.

In addition to comprehensive branding sessions, I also offer dedicated headshot sessions. These include 45 minutes of shooting time and two to three outfits, giving you the variety you need to show up consistently across platforms. Ready to refresh your headshots?
